As Senior Editor Maria Rose-van Epenhuysen covers publications in several languages—Dutch, German, French, Latin, Greek—and in the subject areas of organology, performance practice, and historical musicology.
Dr. Rose is a musicologist and pianist, specializing in fortepiano performance practice and music aesthetics of the 18th and early 19th centuries. She holds degrees in piano performance (Groningen Conservatory, Royal Academy of Music in London, and Bowling Green State University in Ohio), classical languages (MA University of Toledo, 1989), and musicology (PhD. New York University, 2006). Her dissertation is entitled “L’Art de Bien Chanter: French pianos and their Music before 1820″, and explores the development of the early French piano around the time of the Revolution. Ms. Rose has published articles on piano performance practice. As a fortepiano performer she has appeared in music festivals, solo recitals and chamber music concerts across Europe and the U.S. Her recordings include the complete sonatas of Mozart on an original Anton Walter fortepiano. Ms. Rose has taught at the University of Toledo, the Cooper Union, NYU, and Montclair State University. She is the founder of the annual Academy of Fortepiano Performance at the Catskill Mountain Foundation in Hunter, NY, where she performs and teaches each summer. (www.academyfortepiano.org)
